Truth Hurts, But Lies Will Wreck Your Life (How to Recognize and Reject Culture’s Sneakiest Deceptions)

Welcome to a time when your eyes can lie, your ears can deceive, and a stranger on the internet can sound exactly like your grandma—only they’re trying to scam you out of $500 in Apple gift cards. This isn’t paranoia. It’s Tuesday. Thanks to deepfakes, voice cloning, and AI-generated nonsense, we’re all walking around wondering, “Is anything even real anymore?”

We’re living in a world where a person’s voice, face, and words can be manufactured with frightening accuracy. It’s now possible to make anyone say anything, including things they never said, in places they never were. And unfortunately, it doesn’t stop with AI-generated deepfakes. This new era of manipulation has been simmering for a while.

The lies are getting slicker, more sparkly, and disturbingly palatable. Which means we need to get wiser, quieter, and more grounded in something that doesn’t shift with public opinion or tech updates.

THE WORLD ISN’T GETTING LOUDER. WE’RE JUST NOT LISTENING TO THE RIGHT VOICES.

Culture doesn’t usually lie with a bullhorn. It whispers with charm and a cute little smile. “Follow your bliss.” “Be who you are.” “Everyone’s truth is different.” These phrases are embroidered on throw pillows and printed on water bottles. But they are still lies. Because your “truth” might change tomorrow. And, here’s a gem I learned the hard way: feelings are a terrible compass when it comes to morality, truth, or a peaceful life. Feelings lie.

The problem isn’t just that lies exist. It’s that they look so much like the truth. That’s always been the enemy’s strategy. From the very beginning, Satan didn’t come at Eve with a sledgehammer. He came with a question: “Did God really say…??” (Genesis 3:1). All he had to do was create doubt.

Jesus, on the other hand, didn’t come to confuse or manipulate. He said plainly, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). He didn’t stammer. He didn’t waver. He made a declaration. Truth isn’t just a concept; it’s a person. So, when everything else feels like sand under your feet, the solid ground is Jesus.

LIES DON’T LOOK DANGEROUS UNTIL YOU’RE STANDING IN THE RUINS

One of the biggest cultural deceptions right now is that authenticity matters more than holiness. We’ve been sold the idea that as long as you’re being “true to yourself,” you’re on the right path. But Scripture says, “The heart is deceitful above all things” (Jeremiah 17:9). That means sometimes the most “authentic” thing you feel is still a lie.

We want to be liked. We want to be applauded. So when a message shows up that sounds good and asks nothing of us, we listen. But a half-truth is still a whole lie. And a lie that flatters your ego is still a cage. You don’t have to believe every headline, follow every influencer, or agree with every trending opinion to be a kind, thinking person. You just have to believe Jesus. That’s the key, just as Jesus said, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).

PRACTICAL WAYS TO SPOT (AND STOP) DECEPTION

Let’s face it, sometimes we’re not dealing with a big theological crisis. We’re just tired. And tired people make lazy decisions. I get it. It’s not a judgment on my part; it’s a “been there, done that” from me. So how do we stay anchored when culture keeps drifting? Try these:

  1. Get into the real Word, not just reels. Scrolling may be easier, but it won’t teach you how to really live. You’ve got to engage with God, not just TikTok preachers. Some are great, but there is no substitute for the truth of the Bible. The more you read Scripture, the more you can spot a fake. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
  2. Ask, “Who benefits if I believe this?” Every lie has a payoff for someone. I’ve learned that this is one of the most important questions to ask these days. Remember this: Truth always glorifies God, not a brand, not a pastor, not a politician. But finding the truth takes effort. Proverbs 14:15 is the slap in the face that we all need: “The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps.”
  3. Don’t outsource your discernment. Just because someone sounds spiritual doesn’t mean they are. Just because someone has a platform doesn’t mean that they are of God. I will be the first to say – don’t take my word for anything other than a springboard for your own study. Let me ignite your thoughts, then go and study yourself. Trust the Holy Spirit and use the brain God gave you. 1 John 4:1 says, “Test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”
  4. Choose timeless over trending. If a message only makes sense in this exact cultural moment but contradicts Scripture, it’s probably not the truth. Does the world change? Yep. Do people change? Not that much, not really. Human behavior is pretty consistent. Does God change? Never. Isaiah 40:8 says, “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”

THE TRUTH ISN’T MEANT TO FLATTER YOU – IT’S MEANT TO FREE YOU

Honestly, truth doesn’t always feel good. Sometimes it stings a little (or a lot). Sometimes it flips your comfort zone upside down and drags your pride out into the sunlight where it can’t hide behind good intentions. But truth isn’t there to embarrass you. It’s there to rescue you. To pull you out of the confusion, the shame, the comparison game, and the low-grade panic that comes from trying to keep up with a world that changes its mind every five minutes.

God’s truth isn’t clickbait. It doesn’t need to trend. It doesn’t bend to opinions or shrink under pressure. It just stands up for you when no one else will, steady, patient, and strong, just waiting for you to lean on it when everything else feels like smoke and mirrors. That’s what God’s Word does.

And if all this talk about deepfakes and cultural chaos has you feeling overwhelmed, take heart in this: God isn’t nervous. He’s not pacing His throne room, trying to figure out how to compete with the next viral lies. He sees it all. He’s already written the end of the story. He’s still good. Still true. Still near.

So breathe. Stay curious. Stay grounded. And when you’re not sure what to trust—start with Jesus. He’s never lied to you and never will.

What’s one cultural message you’ve had to unlearn lately? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
