How to Make Easter Stick (When the World’s Already Over It)
Easter’s a lot to take in, isn’t it? I mean, Jesus was dead—really dead—and then He wasn’t. That’s not just a story to shrug off; it’s the kind of thing that should stop you in your tracks. If you’re new to this Christian thing, maybe you felt it this Holy Week—the weight of it, the hope of it, like something shifted inside you. I’ve had Easters where I couldn’t get through a worship song without choking up, thinking, “This is real, and it’s bigger than me.” But then Monday happens. Life barrels back in—work, stress, that endless to-do list—and it’s like, “Wait, wasn’t something huge supposed to change?”
I’ve been there more times than I can count. Easter Sunday feels like this bright, unshakable moment, and then the week crashes in, and I’m wondering how to keep it close when everything else feels so distracting and urgent. If you’re feeling that too—especially if you’re still figuring out what following Jesus even looks like—let’s talk about it. Because Easter’s not meant to fade like some holiday glow; it’s a truth you can hold onto, even when life picks up right where it left off. So, let’s take a hard look at what all this Easter stuff means and then sort this out together.
When Easter Feels Like It Slips Away
There’s something about Easter that hits different. Jesus rising from the dead—it’s not just a nice ending; it’s a full-on victory. If you’re new to faith, maybe you felt that spark over the weekend: a humbling sense of awe, a little “Okay, I think I get why this matters.” Each year on Holy Week I watch the movie, The Passion of the Christ. It’s tough to watch for me. I admit that I have to turn away at some points when they are beating Jesus with the cat-of-nine-tails and it rips his skin open. But it’s important for me to remember the price God paid for my salvation. It makes the day of His resurrection so much sweeter.
But then comes Monday, or Tuesday, and life moves on like it doesn’t care. The dishes pile up, the phone won’t stop buzzing, and that hope? It starts feeling distant, like a good dream you can’t quite pull back. I’m all like “He is risen!” in the morning, then by night I’m stressing over something dumb like a Wi-Fi glitch. It’s not that I stop believing—it’s just hard to feel it when the world keeps spinning like nothing happened. Does that ring true for you?
Here’s what I’ve learned: Easter doesn’t need life to slow down to stick with you. John 11:25-26 has Jesus saying, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” That’s not a Sunday-only promise—it’s for right now, every day, no matter what’s piling up.
Why It’s Hard to Keep Close
So why does Easter feel like it’s slipping away by midweek? For one, we’re human—I can barely remember what I ate for breakfast, so holding onto something as massive as the resurrection takes effort. Remember, I have the attention span of a housefly. I make golden retrievers look focused. And life’s noisy—especially now. You’ve got people online saying faith’s a crutch, or your own head wondering if you’re doing this Christian thing right. If you’re new at this, doubt can hit fast: “Was I just caught up in the moment?”
Then there’s the guilt trip. Maybe you stumbled already—lost your temper, zoned out instead of praying—and now you’re thinking, “Great, I can’t even keep this up for a day.” I’ve done it—Easter’s all joy and light, then I’m grumpy by supper, wondering if I’m already messing it up. But Easter’s not about you being perfect; it’s about Jesus being enough.
How to Carry Easter with You
The good news? You don’t have to let Easter fade into the background. It’s not a holiday that ends when the ham’s gone and the chocolate is eaten—it’s a power that walks with you. Romans 6:4 says, “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” That new life isn’t locked to Sunday in early Spring—it’s yours, every morning. So how do you hold onto it when life keeps rolling?
- Pin It Somewhere You’ll See It
Keep it simple—stick a note where you’ll trip over it. I’ve got “He is risen” on my bathroom mirror; it’s not fancy, but it cuts through my chaos. Try Matthew 28:6: “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.” It’s short, solid, and real—perfect for a phone screen, fridge, or a mirror. - Talk to Him, Even If It’s Quick
Prayer doesn’t need to be a production. Just say, “Jesus, I want your resurrection to stay with me—help me feel the gratitude today.” I do this over coffee sometimes; keeps me grounded. He’s alive, so He hears you. 1 Peter 1:3: “In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection.” That hope’s yours—claim it. - Let It Meet Your Mess
Easter’s not just a win over death—it’s a win over the stuff that drags you down. Worry, mistakes, that heavy “I’m not enough” feeling—Jesus beat it all with the resurrection. Colossians 2:12: “Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.” Did you get that? You’re raised too—mess included. - Lean on Someone Who Gets It
You’re not in this alone. Tell a friend, “Easter’s still on my mind—how about you?” I’ve got people who pull me back when I drift; they’re more precious to me than gold. Hebrews 10:24-25 tells us to keep encouraging each other—don’t skip that part.
Easter’s More Than a Week of the Year
Easter’s not a one-off—it’s a truth that holds steady. Jesus didn’t rise so you’d feel good for a day and then limp along. He rose so you’d know death’s not the end, guilt’s not the end, the Monday after Easter is not the end. His life continues. Our faith continues. His grace continues. If you’re new to this, it’s not about having everything about “religion” or Christianity itself figured out. It’s about letting Him walk with you, step by step, even when you’re still learning the way.
So, when life picks up where it left off—and it will—you don’t have to let go of the essence of Easter. You’ve got a risen Jesus who’s not leaving. He’s not a memory from Sunday; He’s alive, right here, carrying you through. 1 Corinthians 15:57 says, “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” That victory’s yours, today, tomorrow, always.
Easter isn’t over—not even close. It’s the beginning of the real stuff with the risen Savior. And He’s walking with you into whatever comes next.
