Why Jesus? (When Everything Else Seems So Much More Attractive)

I spent a good chunk of my adult life trying to make sense of things without Jesus. I chased after what seemed smart, what felt right, and what the world told me would make me happy. I picked up different worldviews like they were fashion trends—one season, I was all about self-empowerment, the next, I was knee-deep in the ‘just do what makes you happy’ mentality. And let me tell you, it left me absolutely miserable. I was flailing, trying to build a life on shifting sand, and I didn’t even like the person I had become.

I knew Jesus—I mean, I am a Southern Baptist Preacher’s Daughter. I have no doubt that I accepted Jesus as my Savior as a kid. Others may argue that, but not my problem. But as an (ahem) older adult, something changed. The Jesus that I had studied, taught on, and then ran from became a real, living, unshakable Savior. Maybe it was the weight of life’s disappointments, or maybe it was hitting rock bottom one too many times—but from that point on, nothing in my life has been the same. And I want to tell you why He is worth following, especially when so many other things seem easier, take less effort, and seem more attractive.

Now, before you think I’m about to hand you a tract and yell at you from a street corner—stick with me. This isn’t about rules or guilt trips. It’s about what actually works in life. It’s about choosing something real over something that just looks good for a little while. So, grab your coffee, settle in, and let’s talk.

The Illusion of ‘Something Better’

Our culture is packed with shiny distractions. Success, money, relationships, hustle culture, ‘finding yourself’—they all promise fulfillment, but it’s the kind of fulfillment that vanishes like mist in the morning sun. One minute, you feel like you’ve got it all figured out, and the next, you’re left with that sinking feeling of is this really all there is?

Jesus, on the other hand, doesn’t promise you a quick fix or a temporary high. He offers something that no worldview, self-help book, or ‘live your truth’ mentality ever could—truth itself. A firm foundation. A reason to wake up every morning that isn’t dependent on how well life is going.

Standing on the Rock, Not Sinking in the Sand

Jesus said, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock” (Matthew 7:24-25, NIV).

This world will shake you. It will throw storms your way that will test everything you believe. If you’re standing on the foundation of whatever feels good in the moment, you’ll find yourself knocked flat every time life takes a swing at you. But Jesus? He is the rock. The steady ground that doesn’t shift under your feet, no matter what season you’re in. When the storm hits, you don’t have to wonder if you’ll make it through—you already know your foundation will hold.

Truth That Doesn’t Change with the Times

Another reason why Jesus? Because He is truth. In a world where everything is up for debate, where morality shifts like the latest TikTok trend, Jesus remains the same. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8, NIV).

Culture tells you to define your own truth, but the problem with that is—what happens when your truth changes? What happens when it contradicts itself? What happens when what made you happy yesterday leaves you empty today?

Jesus offers something better. He offers truth that doesn’t change with your emotions, society’s shifting values, or the latest ‘expert’ opinion. He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6), and when you root yourself in Him, you don’t have to keep reinventing your purpose every time the world moves the goalposts.

So, Why Jesus? Because Life With Him is Solid, Secure, and Satisfying

I tried life without Jesus, and I was miserable. I tried living by my own wisdom, and it led me straight into a pit. Maybe you’re there right now—feeling lost, exhausted, and wondering why everything you chase after keeps slipping through your fingers.

Here’s the good news: you don’t have to keep searching. Jesus is the answer. He is the rock when everything else is sinking sand. He is truth when everything else is confusion. And He is life—real, abundant, soul-satisfying life.

So, when everything else looks more attractive, just remember—shiny things fade. But Jesus? He lasts. And He is worth it.
